Redeemer, a word we read, hear taught and sing! What truly is it? What is a “redeemer.”
God, in his omniscience, realized that to communicate some of the greatest truths to a created being he had to use stories. Stories of the “the human condition.” The book of Ruth is one of those stories. No mention of God, not a religious treatise, but a simple love story. We understand “love.” Well, a least we all have experience with love.
But at the foundation of that love story is the explanation of a “redeemer.”
Ruth was a “Moabite”. A stranger to Israel, an outsider who “fell” for Boaz, a wealthy, benevolent, resident of Bethlehem. But, more importantly, a near kinsman, a kinsman redeemer. One who being Kin ( a good southern word) was able and willing to “redeem” Ruth! but more importantly, one who loved Ruth!
A picture of our “redeemer,” Jesus Christ!
“Sing, oh, sing of my Redeemer,
With His blood He purchased me,
On the cross He sealed my pardon,
Paid the debt, and made me free”
